Don't get into a panic like that, it just means you didn't install the audio drivers. you could go into the control panel (its right on the start menu) there you can see a bunch of icons in category view (switch to category view by clicking "category view"on the left side of the control panel's window.) up at the top of the window now there should be an icon called "device manager" open it. there is a series of categories that shows your hardware, there should be a category that has an explanation mark (!) in yellow, open that and look at the devices listed, open them and go to the driver tab, then hit "update driver" Now it would be a good idea to be connected to the internet while you do this so Windows can look for drivers. but if it doesn't find any, you can go to your manufacturer's website and go to the support section. look for your make and model and then download the audio drivers, if there are ones that are specifically designed for Vista, download and install them. hopefully your device will work. if you bought another sound card to use for your system, go to their website and download the appropriate drivers. after restarting the computer, the sound device should work.
Good luck with the dilemma!

windows orb(old start location)-> control panel-> left hand side click on classic view-> click device manager-> look under "sound, video and game controllers". What do you see? are there any items that have a red X (it is disabled, right click->enable) or a yellow exclamation(bad drivers or device, reinstall device driver). Also look under "other devices" all device in here do not have drivers. Since vista is a newer OS, this is very likely. Install those drivers(on manufacturers drivers disk).

First, try windows update to see if the sound company has a new driver registered with them. You would have to look at the custom updates not the express update.

If windows doesn't have it, you may look at the manufacturer of the sound card to see if they have an update for your program. Be sure to specify right version of vista, there's basic and home premium and professional, and 32 bit vs 64 bit

If still not working perhaps you could borow another card to test if yours is defecive
