Huge amounts of information are stored in many places -- and 'shipped' around the country between stores and govt agencies all the time. Not to mention credit reporting agencies and insurance companies, which share copies of everything.

Identity theft is just one of the major problems -- and that information has been compromised for hundreds of thousands of people at various times.
