so thats the assignment i need to write a story with this being my opeining sentence, the story can be about anything.

Could it be a student who just received his/her package from the college they wanted to attend? It would be their acceptance box..fears of not being accepted, shame of "cheating" to get in? They could have cheated on the essay or lied on parts of the application to get inl

First of all, the opening should be rewritten:
"When I opened the box, all my shame and my fears fell away."
That extra "they" should be eliminated.
You were brought up without a father. The rumor you grew up with was that your father was a bum, a cheat, a drunk, a terrible person, a murderer, a con who spent life in some far away prison.
In the box is a letter from your real father. He is the nicest man possible. He died in the war as a war hero. A picture is included. You can see the resemblance between him and you.
An explanation is given as to why you were forced to live with this deception.
What a nice story is in the box--so much nicer than the unreality you have had to endure for years and years.

And when I opened the box, all my shame, my fears, they fell away. There inside was the most beautiful dress i had ever seen. I knew he loved me. I knew he was sincere when he asked me to marry him. How could i ever doubt him? I was overwelmed with joy...until i realized what i had done. Now in order to understanf what i am talking about, reader, you need to know what our relationship was.
Ever since i was young i always lived next door to (insert your favorite guy name here.) We were best friends. Until his mom sent him to boarding school out in the mountains. Well you see just recently he came back and got a job in the same building as me. We were close friends but never had i thought of spending my life with him. I mean we were best friends! That was all. PERIOD.
One night he came to my house with a box. Before i could open it though, he said i had to answer one question. That question was if I would marry him. Of course i thought he was joking. We never had a close realtionship. I laughed then when I realized that he was still on his knee, i slaped him and told him to leave.
But seeing this dress, i realized that he ment it. He did not care that i could not afford anything fancy for the wedding and that my parents could not afford one either. He was willing to pay for everything.

ooooooooooo....this is hard...let me try. And when I opened the box, all my shame, my fears, they fell away. I felt so rejoiceful and pleased, as if my soul had been reborn. I was so releaved of my hurt and pain that i could vaguely remember what was in there. All I can remember is glowing and shimmering light, and that's about it.
Is that good enough?
