I have a 95 Wrangler automatic trans. and the oil gauge suddenly started going crazy. It normally fluctuates depending on driving or idle (idle it's usually right in the middle, driving, slightly above). This time, the needle shot straight to the top and held while driving and dipped down to low while in idle. There's nothing visibly wrong with anything in the engine, and the oil tank is still full. Any suggestions on where I should start to check things would be welcome.

Check your sending unit usually found next to your oil filter or if you have the 360 c.i.d its in the back of the motor just left and below the distributor. i experienced the same problem before and it was the sender, It's about $28 at Napa Auto Parts. when you check this out have someone sit inside, key on engine off, disconnect the wire have them tell you what the guage reads, touch wire to block, see what guage reads it should be maximum, if not your guage is faulty. if it is good replace sender, make sure you get one for a guage. good luck and have fun!

Sounds like it's time for Oil & Filter Change and Maybe System Flush! Gauge lines are 1/4" or smaller and can be effected easily by any amount of dirt or slug.

Time was we knew when an oil change by the way the gauge acted. Oops.......Telling my age.

Do not drive unless you know the oil is up to level
The gauge itself could be bad or the oil pressure sending unit may be acting up

It's possible that either your oil pressure gauge or your sensor is faulty, in which case they would need to be replaced. My advice though, would be to visit a service center as soon as possible just in case something else is happening.

I think you have a bad ground on your gauge or it needs to be replaced. Check the wiring for corrisons.
