There is absolutely no problem with Spongebob. For the children, they just like the colorful characters and how they act stupid and funny. Of course an adult or an older child will be able to catch on to some things that a small child wouldnt, but the show is just there for entertainment for all ages.

That's something that people have to decide on an individual basis. There MIGHT be some kids who can handle it.
What I have to say applies not only to Spongebob but to all kids shows and all toons.
Does it teach children to take a race or ethnic group or economic class lightly...? Does it teach children to take sex lightly...?
I hope that putting these two questions next to one another helps you make the connection. We would not tolerate a show that hinted at kids being bigoted or prejudiced in some way. We would say, "We don't want them influenced in ANY negative way by this show!" And if anybody said, "it's only a little bit," we would say, "There's no such thing as a little bit of cancer or a little bit of aids, and there's no such thing as a little bit of contempt for others on the basis of race etc."
So, when some people say "It's all right to joke around about sex," that's teaching people not to take sex seriously. When you consider the likely consequences of careless sex... children, disease and broken hearts... we realize that we should take it seriously.
Adults find sexual humor funny because they are able to recognize the incongruity of it, the fact that jokes do not portray reality. The vast majority of children are unable to make the distinction.
Help them make the distinction by teaching them not to take sex as a joke, but prepare them to understand that it is a part of adult life that will be beautiful and wonderful if it is used properly.
When your own child is the one who may have a child or a disease or have their heart broken and become unable to establish or enjoy real relationships because the specter of sex is still looking over their shoulder, it makes us want to be careful, and i applaud you for that. Better safe than sorry.
I hope that nobody will say, "They have to make mistakes to learn." That is just lazy parenting. The best mistakes to learn from are OTHER PEOPLE'S mistakes.
I realize this is a long answer, but your question was such a good one! Thank you for asking it because it is a subject that many people need to hear about but few people stop to think seriously about. And thank you for patiently reading my whole Answer.
Please wear a white ribbon this week, to show your stand against pornography. We can all take steps to keep our own kids from getting 'interested' in shows and comics that increasingly use sex to sell and portray sexy sitations, etc., to the point where they don't see much difference between them and porn. Help keep our kids away from this dangerous and self-demeaning sex-addiction!

Oh, I absolutely LOVE Spongebob!! I think it's meant for both children and adults. It's not inappropriate for children, but sometimes there are certain jokes that only adults can comprehend.

A good cartoon reaches across all generations.
Sponge Bob has humour that can been seen on different levels: slapstick for kids and one-liners for you.

I think it's appropriate for both. Some of the content only adults can understand, but it's still not gratuitous. So it's for both.

No, If your child is too young to understand the adult humor/puns, don't worry about it. If they are old enough, they obviously get it and it is appropriate.
