Oh it does this heart good to see those reminders again.
I am forgetting so much now about the openings of the differ-
ent radio shows. I was going to guess that the closet with
everything falling out was Fibber McGee and Mollys' show.
I was so amused when I'd hear the noise. I'd be snuggled in
between my parents in bed to hear only those shows that
weren't on too late. Amos and Andy, dear me. I'd love to hear
their shows again. I loved hearing them talk. And what a shock to learn they were white men later on that did the program.
Today I met with a young woman resident doctor who had
a familiar last name. Are you ready? It was Aldrich. as in
Henry Aldrich. She told me I was the second person to tell
her that today. And the first actually did the mothers famous
call: Henry!!!! Henry Aldrich! And the son replied, "Coming
Mother!"
Wasn't the Life of Rielly on the radio before TV? It seems
that it was. I loved that family show. And Our Miss Brooks. With Miss Brooks and Mr Boynton and the pimply faced teen
with the squeaky voice, what was his charicters' name, played
by Richard Crenna? And I thought I'd never forget!
Thanks for the memories. I enjoyed the trip back in time.
Oh, by the way, wasn't the person who answered the
phone, Duffy, from Duffy's Tavern? I remember only a bit
from that opening. He'd say, "Duffys' Tavern, Duffy speaking!"

I remember listening to some of those shows in the late 1940s before TV conquered the world of entertainment in the home. BTW, Fibber McGee and Molly also produced the first "spin off" show in radio when they developed a comedy series about the mayor of their town: "The Great Gildersleeve".
Amos and Andy was a different story and one which couldn't be aired today without lines of protestors in front of the station. Not just for the material. More so because the two principal actors (Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll) were white men.

Fibber McGee and Molly, Amos n Andy, Baby Snooks and Daddy, Lights Out. I wasn't born yet when they were on the radio. But I was fortunate enough to work at a mail order company that sold these treasures on records and tapes. It's too bad they don't bring these back on the radio- they were great to listen to.

I've heard of Fibber McGee and Molly but never experienced the radio show....and yes, saw Amos N Andy on TV but never listened to it on radio.

FYI all - NPR runs a Sunday evening show where they rebroadcast many old radio shows!!

For extra points...Fibber & Molly lived on Wistful Vista Avenue--and had a really annoying little girl neighbor who always came in and said "Hi, mister" when Fibber was really busy with something. As for Duffy's Tavern...the opening line was "Duffy's Tavern, Archie the manager speaking, Duffy ain't here"...and that was the gag, Duffy never was there but Archie carried the exposition & story line.

But for the very VERY best, the Fred Allen show with all those weird characters...Mrs. Nussbaum [played by Allen's wife Portia], Senator Claghorn [...Senator Claghorn that is, ] and the Old Timer ["howdy, bub"]. Allen wrote most of the material and developed most of the characters..Allen was an innovative bright man who eventually had his professional heart broken by the corporate suits running radio by the sponsors' rule-book.

Wow, do I ever!!
In fact I have the cassette collection of "The Golden Days of Radio"
Fibber Mc Gee and Molly, Pepper Youngs Family, Young Dr. Malone, Burns and Allen, and so many more, that 'I' remember as a child,( before tv). My Grand children listen to them now.
My absolute favorite: "Who's On First" Abbott and Costello,
Nothing, (in my opinion )has measured up it, before or since.
Thanks For The Memories
It has been fun, going ''back to those thrilling days, of yesteryear''. LOL
