Generally, I would not assume that nice guys finish last. Just do not expect them to ever finish first.
In some instances, however, it pays off to wait till others had their fill and ware themselves out. That's when nice guys can take the opportunity without hurting anyone in the process.

Nice guys finish last with not so nice (or smart) people. They are 1st with people who deserve them.
Don't care about the former, enjoy being appreciated by the latter.
