Hedwig's death caught me completely by surprise. I was not expecting it, and so early in the book!
I really don't understand why Rowling had to kill off Hedwig.

Yes, I was sad and surprised too but of course that was Rowling's point, I'm sure...
I think this turn of events in the story was to show just how evil and dangerous the Death Eaters and Voldemort were. Hedwig was truly an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a midair chase, and she was defenseless for the most part. She was no one's enemy. (She could have just as easily been one of the Malfoy's owls.) This shows that no one was exempt from what was going on, even the animals.
That she died so early in the book just pricks us up all the sooner, as if to say. "Here we go, and...you ain't seen nothing yet."

yeah! i cryed! i even have a little stuffed animal hedwig!! Rowling probably killed hedwig off, just for the suspens of the book, lol to make it intrusting. over all it was an amazing book though!

I was saddened, too.
Especially since throughout the series Harry often realized that he took Hedwig for granted.

i was definatley upset by hedwig's death. but i can see why she was killed off... with harry and co. on the run, she would be pretty obvious. like in the when sirius tells harry not to always use hedwig when hes sending letters, she's too easily tracked

Jo said in an interview that "The loss of Hedwig represented a loss of innocence and security." She explains it more in the rest of the interview. You should read it, it's great because it answers alot of questions!

I was just more in shock thatn sad because it happend so fast, and early in the book, there really wasnt time to be sad!! But i miss him, i think she killed of hedwig, because he would not really be needed in this book because they couldnt use owls, and he would just kind of be a hastle to take with them.

oh my gosh i almost cried!! she's, like, my favorite character!!!! i couldn't believe it, i thought that some how she'd be okay. *sniffle*
