Please read the below quote from former Chief of Staff at the New York Times. He gave this speech at the prestigious NY Press Club. He was considered the "Dean of his Profession" by those who knew him;
" There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth; to lie outright; to pervert;
You get my point...why do this if all was well???

It is absurd to think the media is uncontrolled. I am not suggesting that all the images you see on the tube are carefully developed by the government. I am only suggesting that all items must be filtered before they reach your eyes.
The media is the most powerful tool to influence your point of view. It makes you think, it makes you cry, it makes you angry, it keeps you entertained. Think about the issues and the current events that we discuss on a daily basis. We discuss them because we saw them on TV or read it on the news. The media can bring your focus on an issue and conceal the issues that they do not want to be discussed.
That is why the media can be a dangerous weapon for rebels if not controlled. Those of you who knows about the Rwanda genocide may understand how powerful the media is, with each group using the radio to stir hatred and to raise morale.
The internet is a wonderful invention in that it provides a communication portal connecting the world and it becomes much harder to control. However, countries like China is trying very hard, by blocking sites after sites. It is not hard to find TV programs and documentaries on the internet that were once banned on TV. ( I attached a good example.)
Although different countries have different filter mechanisms, to think it is absolutely free is to deny the power of the media.
The first user suggested that because we see the two sides of the story in Iraq, it must not be controlled. That's a very weak argument. To maintain the debate on both sides, it keeps the population confused and thinking and forget the real issues at hand. The issue being, what exactly are we doing in Iraq again? They weren't responsible for 911, and there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction like they claim. Have we already forgotten the lies that got us there?

Of course it is controlled. No one doubts it and this has been fact for along time. It is 'controlled' by a consortium of wealthy people and the government ( the last FCC Chairman was Colin Powell's son ). If it were up to the regular Joe, there would be no censorship ( sorry folks that means x-rated tv) and you would actually see the body bags of the dead from Iraq, not to mention the amputees and others with their faces blown off. ANd that is why there are only two political parties getting any media attention. The reality is, there are 30 different parties with 30 candidates that DON'T have a D or an R after there party affiliation. But you will NEVER see ads from them or news stories about them because they are not part of the 'consortium' of power that controls what you do and don't see and hear.

On point, considering the completely irrelevant role the media played in exposing the lies associated with 9-11, here is some info that presents, for anyone with a clue, the undeniable fact that 9-11 was an inside job: http://www.vic911truth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=487 read it and weep.

The media is only interested in sensationalism. That is what sells and if they stuff up and have to appologize, you will find it hidden somewhere you would not look. On the other hand, if something good comes out of a great story, you don't hear about it.

You got to be kidding! If the government controlled the media, every single story would be sunshine and lollipops. I don't see that, particularly on the network news channels.
If you actually had a point, perhaps I might get it.

This is in response to the first answerer "D"
The government isn't controlling the Media, But Left Wing nut jobs are. It's people with a specific agenda that control the Media and try to brainwash us to think a certain way. They
want everyone to get rid of Morals and Values and start living their lives making decisions off "How it makes you feel inside" Which doesn't solve the problems in the world it only sugar coats them and lets them linger until it all explodes in our face.

That's what society wants -- most people don't want the truth, can't handle the truth, and want to be lied to -- they want to hear that everything is fine -- they want the sensational stories that let them ignore their own lives, but they don't want to be confronted with a reality that they don't think they can change.
Politics influences the media -- but the real "control" comes through the corporations based on what the customers want and don't want -- which is why popular stories and formats thrive -- and unpopular ones fade away.
People -- humans as a species -- don't want to face reality and don't have the courage or compassion to seek truth -- so the corporations that run the papers and the networks give people what they want -- a carefully filtered pseudo-reality that is just interesting enough to be entertaining without being threatening -- and without forcing people to have to actually respond to the world around them.

Some peoples honest opinion would be to call a politician a jerk or something worse. How can a media source claim to be impartial if they get into name calling. Also, they are not paid to give opinions, that is what is called an editorial, they are paid to report events.
Rush gives opinions, do you want all the news to be like him.
