China hasn't been communist in 20 or 30 years.
In the 50's is when they first started going towards capitalism. The farmers, because of the failure of collective farming, were the first capitalists, in a limited fashion.
Since then, China has turned into one huge capitalistic machine with a totally free market system.
What is now state run businesses turns out to be a mixture of state and private working side by side. Their petroleum industry is a good example and one of the reasons that the cost of a gallon of gas is about a dollar cheaper in China. Taxes are not added on top, profits for the state and private enterprise is all part of the bottom line.
When I first landed in China is 2003, it took me all of about 6 hours to realize that China is not communist. People can open businesses, get rich, invest in their stock market, become landlords, buy homes and most any consumer item they want, change jobs, move, even immigrate outside of China. In short, enjoy most anything that people in the west enjoy.
One final note, Henry Kissinger, the cold warriors warrior even says China is communist in name only. If one wants to argue that the name justifies calling them a communist state, then they must agree N Korea is a democratic state since they have that in their name also.
Signed, an ex pat living in the heart of China
Peace

China was never truly communist -- it always allowed for private property ownership -- it was primarily socialist.
And yes, it is shifting to a mix of socialism and capitalism -- the same as every other high-tech country -- because that's the only way to grow an economy -- socialism by itself doesn't grow.

Yes in many ways. The repression of the political system that has existed is still there, but economically, they are opening China up. They realize the vast potential is there if they shed the dogmatic economical practices of their ancestors.

China in order to continue its booming economy must continue to adopt capitalism. Communism if not changed will bring back China to its wartime level.
