Actually you have a positive and a negative factor so one must subtract from the other to get 5. You can't get to 5 the way you are doing it.

Try:
(x + 6)(x - 1)

The 2 and 3 will never add to 5 if one must be negative to get -6. So use different factors, 6 &1. Then it must be
(x+6)(x-1)

X^2 + 5x - 6 = 0?

What two numbers do you ADD to get 5 and MULTIPLY to get -6?
ANS: 6 and -1
6 + (-1) = 5
6 * (-1) = -6

X^2 + 5x - 6 = 0
(x+6) (x-1) = 0

My factors to this question are (x+6)(x-1)

So, the solution is x=-6 or 1

x^2 + 5x - 6 = 0

(x - 1)(x + 6)

x = 1

x = -6

x^2 + 5x - 6 = 0

(x-1)(x+6) = 0

CHECK:

(x-1)(x+6) = x(x+6) - (x+6) = x^2 + 6x - x - 6 = x^2 + 5x - 6
