after reading quite a bit about it...pro and con...it seems to me it's real and coming soon. Fuel shortages or high prices, fuel siphoning, food shortages due to high delivery costs, economic effects, etc. So my question is, where do you want to be when the **** hits the fan?

We've chosen to rely on a non-replenishable toxic substance that is controlled by very few countries -- of course there's going to be a problem as supplies run low.
The fact that greed and corporate opportunism have locked us into this dead-end path -- that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who has studied corporate politics.
As long as we are foolish enough to allow someone else's greed to determine our choices -- we're stuck. It's only when we are willing to bear the cost and time and effort to dig ourselves out of the mess we've allowed that we can start looking for solutions.
And we can either do that now -- before we run out -- or later, when we start running out. Personally, I'd like to think the human race had learned not to leave such major projects to the last minute when it becomes a crisis -- but sadly, the human race isn't that foresightful.

If we didn't have what Sally Field tried to call the "g...........d War," we'd have enough money to pour into the search for alternative energy sources. As it is, we barely have enough money to pay for Scooter Libby's Defense Fund or Cheney's vacations in "Undisclosed Locations."
Our country is up to its neck in debt, with the Middle Class in serious trouble, the housing market defunct, the job market slow, food prices rising...and, when that fuel supply has "peaked" and reaches bottom, we will know better than to elect another fool to lead us.
It is amusing to think that some Conservatives believe that "them sinful Libruls" are at fault for building refineries, but the last I know, the oil crisis was blamed on the lack of them....refineries, not Libruls, we got a lot of them sinners around.
George Bush doesn't believe in funding research for Alternative Fuels any more than he believes in peace. Nor are we funding buses or trains, both of which would alleviate some of the problems. Instead, we are funding Halliburton and Blackwater. So, dust off your bicycles, folks, and practice pedaling. The Machine Age may soon fade into history. Let's hope George Bush follows that same path.

I live in a small Arizona. My daily commute takes about four minutes if I don't hit the one and only light between me and the school where I teach. For some strange reason I hardly ever make it....thus sitting at idle for at least 90 seconds burning up gas. Generally in a week I burn through about five gallons of regular so fuel prices and shortages really don't apply to me. On the downside, millions of americans drive 50 to 75 miles round trip to work and stop at God knows how many red lights, thus burning up God knows how many gallons of gas for nothing. This situation has been at least on the 'mid-burner' for decades. Yet the Oil Mafia and the auto manufacturers have gone out of their way to prevent any realistic raise in the CAFE standards to improve miles per gallon. Basically the public has been screwed because their 'leaders'...at least in this case, are in cahoots with thieves, gangsters, criminals and outlaws. After this next election there had better be a huge change in direction. NO vehical should be imported into or built in the US unless it gets 40 mpg minimum. People running for federal office need to be put on notice.....promise a new direction in fuel use or you don't get my vote. Of course a lot of people will vote on where the candidate stands on abortion, gays and whatever toy religion they practice....so don't expect anything but paying out the anatomy for gas for the rest of your life! Be prepared to die broke!

My husband is currently researching converting one of our cars to an electric or electric hybrid. We also plan to replace one of our cars with a Volt or similar off the line plug in hybrid.
We have plans as well to move in the next year or so, and we plan to have a wind generator on the 5 acre place.
We have economized every way we reasonably can for the past 30 years. We drive economical vehicles, car pool, walk or ride a bike when possible. We have compact florescent bulbs in just about every light socket in the house. We have appliances on power strips and we turn the power off when we are away from them.
The coming crisis isn't "news." Most of us who were paying attention have known for at least 30 years that something unpleasant would hit the fan sometime before 2050. Isn't it ironic that Carter's attempts to cut our ties to our oil dependency during the oil embargo of the 1970's got short- circuited in Reagan's "gee, isn't everything just keen, and wouldn't it be great if we could get back to the 50's" era.
Where do I want to be? Well, I'd like to be in a sane world with reasonable leaders who rely on science and diplomacy, where innovation in technology is funded even if it only helps people and not military goals, where people don't think that what they want is identical to what they need, and where people understand that having and spending and using the most of anything is no more than a modern potlatch, and just as destructive to the society!
I'll probably be in Texas, though.

You're truck has a toilet? I been driving for a while and haven't heard anything about trucks with toilets. The coming oil shortage is probably real. It will be tough to drill oil in the Middle East when the world is busy fighting WWIII there. If Bush and co have their way, it seems that is exactly where we are headed.
