Darker backgrounds are great for fish tanks because they help the fish feel more secure as well as show off their colors. Bright, gaudy, neon colors will detract from your fish, and stress them as well (fish are easier to see from above when there is a light substrate, making them easy prey). Either black substrate, or natural gravel are great to display fish in a natural environment.

Possibly.

If you use light gravel this will refelect light back from the overhead lights and illuminate the underside of the fish, something that wont happen with black.

Personally I prefer darkish green backgrounds - large prints that are stuck to the back of the tank (on the outside), they usually come with a picture on both sides so you can change them as your moon suits.

Remember if you have plants (real or plastic) they are going to break up your background with their colour.

The type of lighting you use can effect how well your fish show up, for instance those with a more magenta light really make reds standout.

Also certain foods have colour enhancment adatives - as with the lights read the packaging and choose to suit.

The darker gravel does tend to show off the colors better. I have mixed black gravel and a dark natural gravel together and the fish really show off there colors.
