5 essays? That's a bummer. I'm actually writing an essay right now. Well, no, I'm stalling, but I'm about to be writing one. I'd suggest the Dream Syndicate, the Replacements, or the Feelies. It works for me. Specific songs...the Dream Syndicate "Let it Rain", "Tell Me When It's Over", "Halloween", "Boston". As for the Replacements "Left of the Dial", "I Will Dare", "Can't Hardly Wait". The Feelies..."Time for a Witness", "It's Only Life", "Original Love"

Go with some old-school funk, R&B, and soul. Try these:
Hollywood Swingin' - Kool & the Gang
Higher Ground - Stevie Wonder
One Nation Under a Groove - Funkadelic
That Kind of Person - Sly & the Family Stone
Outta Space - Billy Preston
Fight the Power - Isley Brothers
Joints & Jams - Blackeyed Peas
Machine Gun - The Commodores
Theme from SHAFT - Isaac Hayes
Alphabet Street - Prince & the Revolution
[ADDED] Go to iTunes or Amazon and download the soundtrack to a movie called "Dick" (no joke) - 1973 pop standards that will keep you on your toes.
STAY AWAKE!

I would (and usually do) recommend Dream Theater.
Any and all of their tunes. Very progressive, interesting, and great.
No screamo. No simple, 3 chord rock, no lite music to watch paint dry by.
Check 'em out!

No heavy metal? But that like..defidently wakes people up. Well, I WAS gonna say System of a Down..but they are heavy metal sort of. Especially with the song BYOB. Ok well, yeah I dunno.
