Go for it, if it doesnt work just return it.
According to the specs your computer has a PCI-E slot which will fit the 8600 but its also a mini tower. If it doesnt fit just return it heh. Most video cards below 8800 or x2900 dont require power cord directly from the Power Supply, so just give it a try.
You can also go to the Video card's manufacturers website to look for the manual. Read it and see if it require the power cable in the Installation section

Hi. This review says that its a pretty good machine. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://reviews.cnet.com/sc/31753310-2-200-0.gif&imgrefurl=http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/gateway-gt5040-digital-diversion/4505-3118_7-31753310.html&h=150&w=200&sz=10&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=froUNoUuscVdZM:&tbnh=78&tbnw=104&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dgateway%2Bgt5040%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DN
So, as long as the card has the right configuration (AGP, PCIe, etc.) you should be good to go. Keep in mind that your PSU needs to be more powerful since this card consumes almost 200 watts just by itself. http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/xfx_8600_gt/10.html
