The rule of thumb s to turn it down to 60 as this will save heating costs AND it will be easier to warm the home back to 68 when you get home. Remember, the higher the thermostst, the higher your bill!

It's not recommended to turn your heat down too low or off as it will take so long to get the house reheated you will spend more trying. Remember that not only does the air have to heat but the furnishings. Turn your thermostat down no lower than 65 during the day or get a programmable thermostat so you can schedule your times of the day and heat level. Do not turn your heat off. That could do more damage to your home than you want to deal with.

I installed a programmable thermostat almost two years ago
its programmed to warm the house to 69 when I come home and maintain a minimum of 62 during the day

Its cut my energy usage by 8-10 percent

you never want to move your thermostat more than 2 or 3 degrees in either direction. Remember you are not just heating the air you are heating everything in your home to its CORE, your couch, countertops, beds, doors, walls etc.... so the heating/cooling unit will work until the entire home is the same temp.

any more than 5-6 Deg in difference doesn;t relly save any $$ as it takes more to bring it back up to temperature.
