in the days of sail it was a warship smaller than a ship of the line. HMS Victory is a ship of the line; USS Constitution is a frigate.........both still exist; both have a million pictures on the web you can look at; Constitution, at 210 years old is still sailing and still a commissioned warship in the US Navy.
if you mean from 1935 onwards.......it would be a warship slightly smaller than a destroyer in most Navies; in the US Navy up to 1977 a ship smaller than a destroyer was a destroyer escort ( A DE ); a ship bigger then a destroyer but smaller than a cruiser would be a frigate ( FF, FFG).....it finally got too confusing with 3,000 ton British ships and 8,000 ton American ships both considered frigates; the US re classed their ships as cruisers or destroyers in '77 and like everyone else, saved frigate for small escort ships
