These are done just like equalities with a couple extra rules. If you multiply by a negative number, reverse the sign. Or if you reverse the equation, reverse the sign. Keep that in mind, otherwise just use the same methods you would for equalities to get the variable by itself:

PROBLEM 1:
8 + y < -6

Subtract 8 from both sides:
y < -6 - 8

Simplify:
y < -14

PROBLEM 2:
-5 > k - 3

Add 3 to both sides:
-5 + 3 > k

Simplify:
-2 > k

Switch it around:
k < -2
