I am a freshman at UC Berkeley majoring in molecular and cell biology. I took Calculus I at a university my junior year of high school; however, I know that most medical schools want two years of math. Therefore, I was wondering if it would be sufficient if I took Calculus II at a community college in the summer time. Would medical schools accept this? Would these two classes together fulfill the one year math requirement? Please answer this question only if you have enough knowledge/experience about this topic. Thank you!

hey my sister did bachelors in molecular biology and in genetics. She went to community college first and then transferred out to UCLA for medical school. She took her calculus in community college. ...so i guess it's okay.

Hi, I majored in MCB at Cal and lived to (apply to med school) and tell the tale.

It is a common trick among MCB students to take some requirements at community colleges during the summer. Simply have those transcripts available for AMCAS when you get aorund to paplying.

Secondly, you don't need two years of calc. You need two semesters. Math 1A&B, or Math 16A&B (or their community college equivalents) will suffice. Math 32 will NOT suffice.

One more thing about MCB and pre-med, though, good luck. Study hard. It's competitive. Also, make sure you finish your second half of general chem. Either take Chem 1B or Chem 130.

You will have to confer with the registrar's office at Berkeley. The class from the community college has to meet accreditation standards at Berkeley to be able to transfer the credit.

Most of the time it is english classes that don't transfer because they can be so different, but math classes are all pretty much the same....standardized. I think you shouldn't have a problem but verify it first.

You sound like a hard working student, good luck!

I took a couple of classes at a community college when I was a senior in high school before I went to college. I am in medical school now and I didn't have any trouble with my credits counting at all.

Admission committees don't care where you take a course as long as it meets the requirements. As long as both courses are reflected on your college transcript, you'll be good to go--and I'd verify that your Calc I course is on your transcript. While you're doing that, I'd also verify that the university will accept the transfer credit. Most will, but you never know where some quirk will show up.

Either Berkeley accepted it as credit (in which case it's already on your transcript as another math course) or let you use it to place out of Calc I. Since they want two years of math basically to get you through Calc II, I don't imagine they would care if you got through Calc II anyway.
