Wavelength

The frequency. Our eyes are sensitive to light within certain frequencies. At the lower end is red light which has the longest wavelength. Just below that is infrared (infra meaning under). At the upper end is violet light, having shorter wavelengths and therefore a higher frequency. Above that is ultraviolet (ultra meaning over). Visible light occupies a very narrow band of the electromagnetic spectrum but it works for us. If our eyes were sensitive to gamma rays (a much higher frequency) then the world would be a very dark place, with dim glows around nuclear weapons and reactors.
