This is a debate question I have. I am on the "no" side but I am interested to find out what people think on both sides and why they think that.

No its not viable.

Yes it is viable and desirable. If it weren't for oil, we'd starve and freeze so a continued presence is necessary. Our presence in the middle east inflames the radical muslims. They should be flamed, it draws them out into the open and our troops can engage them. China has an eye on the region and it would be a disaster if they got a hold of the resources there.

We don't have a choice in the matter, as long as we import oil instead of developing our own supplies we have an interest in continuing to have a presence there.
