The first and most important is way to learn management is to work for a good manager. That's tricky, because you don't really know if he or she is good until you already work there. Pay attention to what your managemer does. See what things seem good, and what things seem bad. Make a mental note of both.

If you want to be a CEO, you almost certainly need to get a formal education in business. An undergraduate degree (BS or BA) in business is helpful but not required. However, after you graduate with whatever undergraduate degree, you should get work experience and then an MBA (Masters of Business Administration). As you point out, CEO's don't need to know everything specific. On the other hand, they do need to know a little about almost all functions of the company. And generally, a CEO will have specialist knowledge in one field like sales, marketing, or finance because of other management positions and lower executive positions that he or she has held before becoming a CEO.

If you want to get a management position, the most important thing to do is to work hard and excel at your current position. The Bible asks "If you are not faithful over that which is another man's, who will give you your own?"

Just as a warning, being CEO isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's a job full of very long hours, a lot of stress, and not as much freedom as you think. The CEO works for the board of directors and the shareholders, not himself or herself. If you aren't prepared to take responsibility for stupid things that your subordinates do, maybe you'd prefer to be a doctor or lawyer instead. Of course, those jobs involve more stress and longer hours than you might think, too.

Management skills are gained pretty much by osmosis.Jack Welch, former GE main man worked through several jobs on his way to the top.First, have a skill which a company can use. Get to know that skill thoroughly and apply it thoroughly. Advancement thru an organization is usually by sponsor( One who feels comfortable with you) who will open doors for you. Usually this will lead to lower management jobs. How you function at lower levels will determine how and when you rise.
