I am referring to a body that has not been embalmed. How long would it take to begin to decay after death, not to the bones stage, but just until the smell and look of the corpse clearly showed decomposition. Thanks.

Other than an undue amount of attention from insects and the like, a corpse might not look beyond the range of variation of living people for a few days. Usually after a week it has decomposed past the point where anyone would suspect that it is still alive.

The link below has a VERY good site with pictures of different signs and stages of decomposition. Check it out! (I think stage 3 is what you're thinking of)

Depends on the soil its in, the insects native to the area, the humidity, the climate, altitude, all that sort of thing. Many different things can effect how long it takes for a body to decomp, or start to decomp.
