I totally agree with you! Technology is a great thing, but it's really beginning to change the dynamic of relationships - we spend so much time in front of our computers with e-mail, instant messaging, and text messages, we end up spending so much less time having quality communication with the ones we love.
I think it's an addiction for some people - especially when you consider how many people out there text while driving! Many state lawmakers are considering creating laws that would ban the use of cell phones to text while driving. What could possibly be so important that you would need to risk your life to TEXT someone? An emergency is an emergency, but for heaven's sake, just call the person! Why risk causing an accident?
I text friends and family from work on rare occasions, when I can't get away and need to ask a question or confirm plans, but it's minimal. Heck, I pay by the text message on my phone plan rather than have unlimited messaging, because my texts come out cheaper than spending $10/month on unlimited!
Instant communication is a great thing - but it's no substitute for the real thing!

I think some people would rather text than talk on the phone.
A lot of students text message on their phones while in school, and a fair amount of other people text message during circumstances where it isn't considered appropriate to do so.
Sometimes people get to send and receive texts for free, which may be another reason why people enjoy it.
Texting is another good way to tell somebody something emotional without have to say it out loud. (It's a weak defense mechanism, but people still have been known to do it.)

Because you may be in a place where you'd rather not have a "public" conversation ..
Also , texting frees you up to do what ever it is you need to get done doing..but still communicate at your own pace .
Sometimes I'll get an important text from somebody who is at work..but can't be talking on the phone..
