Because as long as we focus on the trivial lives of public figures we can ignore larger issues facing the world.

Think about it. How often do we hear, "This celebrity did this!" or "Did you hear what that one did?" It's all over the news...in fact, there are entire news shows and channels dedicated to publicizing the lives of celebrities. Individually, we might not ALL be obsessed with celebrities...but as a society, it's all we care about.

For how long did our news stations obsess over Brittany losing her kids? Jeez, it's still on there. Dr. Phil devoted an entire episode to her. It's ridiculous--don't we have better things to fret about?

The truth is, we do. That's why we are so focused on celebrities--we don't want to deal with the larger issues at hand. As long as we're more focused on what Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton, and all the other big names are doing, we can ignore more important things. How often do we hear on the news about the Genocide in Darfur? How about the millions of people in Africa that suffer because that country is underdeveloped and nobody gives a damn about them? What about issues that affect our country directly, like healthcare, oil prices...what about the '08 election? Do we hear (or care) about that? What about the recent passing of the Matthew Shepard Act--isn't that something to celebrate?

The thing is, we don't WANT to deal with these issues. We just want to ignore them, defer them, keep putting them off until we can't any longer. It's terrible, and it's a habit that's going to get our world into deeper trouble as time goes on. Who cares about what somebody does in their personal life? It's really none of our business! But what IS our business is all of these pressing issues that we can actually DO something about--and that's exactly why we obsess over celebrities...so we don't have to obsess over things that actually require our attention.

Personally, I think it really says something about our society as a whole.

Who knows. it's been that way forever. Even people in plays were celebrities in the 1400's. I think people that can act like that "live" should be considered more of a celebrity then people like Paris or Britney because they have more talent but get way less money.

I think its due to the fact that some people assume that celebs are flawless and they can do no wrong and that's why they are all over the t.v cause they are humans with flaws just like you and I.

Good question. I have never understood that myself, I don't know why so many people place such importance on another person simply because they are an entertainer.

Are we? I'm not.

I don't even recognise most of the 'celebrities' that my friends and colleagues insist I 'MUST' know.
