NaCl is the molecular formula. Its also the empirical formula.

The molecular formula is a listing of all the numbers of the all the elements that make one molecule of a substance. For a salt molecule, it takes one Na ion and one Cl ion.

The empirical formula is the most simple expression. For example X2Y6 would have an empirical formula of XY3.

NaCl has but one formula, as it is ionic. Na+ and Cl-.

Try another example; mot an ionic compound.
