D.I.Y Doc is correct. What type of countertop is in place, and what are you installing? If you are putting down a pre-made laminate top, you will have to remove the old top and substrate. I prefer to put down new laminate sheet if possible-less work. Scuff sand the existing top with 80 or 100 grit, adhere the new laminate with contact cement, edges first. Trim with a router and a laminate trimming bit. Then adhere the top the same way.

there should be plastic triangle pieces in the top of the base cabinets sometimes they are made of wood and some of them just have strips of wood anyhow you must use A screw to attach the top too the base.
you can use liquid nails on the backsplash

With no offense to you or others who answer; I have to assume "Replace" means NEW. I live in a mobile; and as manufactured they are usually Formica; and GLUED onto the substrate with contact cement. Is this what you're referring to?
