I suppose that would depend on what kind of eating disorder you are referring to in your question. Many people in society tend to, or would like to believe that media plays a big role in eating disorders, and the views of those whom abuse themselves in that manner. It might be true in SOME cases, but certainly not every case. If that were the case, how come so many Americans are overeating. 'Eating their emotions' so to speak? How often do you hear someone say"She's big and beautiful, and I'm going to look like her!" ?!? I'm sure you already know a lot about the topic, if not you can always research it! In my opinion, the reason why eating disorders has become such a controversial topic is because it's a DISEASE; it's all psychological. So many people make such a mockery of women with this disease and it's rather saddening that everything has become such a huge joke to the vast majority of society. It's just like being an alcoholic, or someone who smokes. You become addicted; it's a way of life for some. It makes you feel better about yourself in some ways; not to say that anything is actually changing. You go out to the bar at night; drink a few beers, or drink of your choice; share laughter and an all around good time; kill a few brain cells; you forget about your problems or stress for a few hours; and when you wake up...there it is, waiting, right where you left it. It's the same with an eating disorder; some people do it because they are stressed out by family matters; some do it for social acceptance; some do it because of some sort of trauma they have experienced; others do it because they need to have SOME sense of control in their own life when everything else is falling apart; some do it because when they look in the mirror they don't like what they see, and it isn't always necessarily an actual weight issue that is the start of the disease. Well, I hope this gave you a little insight, or helped you in some way!

Many people believe that eating disorders are caused by images the sufferers see and hear every day in the media. They believe they can live up to those images if they could just lose a bit of weight and then it turns into an eating disorder that can last for years. The truth is that eating disorders are much more complicated than that and the images presented by the media do not have as much an influence as many people like to think. Sufferers typically have other issues in their lives that have little or nothing to do with the media. They often suffer from low self-esteem, feel they have little control in their lives, are often perfectionists, and have an insatiable desire to please others.
