A contusion is a bruise-like injury to the brain. A contusion is a small collection of blood in the soft tissues of the brain caused by trauma. A bruise is a small collection of blood in the soft tissues of the skin caused by trauma.

Brain contusions are often diagnosed with CT or MRI.

In contrast, a concussion is an injury to the brain that does not appear on either CT or MRI - it has to be diagnosed based on the patient's description of the symptoms.

The term "contusion" can be used in association with any organ - so lungs, kidneys, hearts, brains, muscles, etc. can all be contused.
