On the football field at Harvard. They were contemplating expanding the field because they couldn't move the ball that much. So, they invented the forward pass, a play that changed the game into what it is today.

American football began to divert from rugby after the American civil war (ended 1865). The first record of a football game is between Rutgers University and Princeton University in or about 1872. In the 1930s the ball was made less round and more conical for better passing. The game has had the same basic rules for 70 or 80 years at least. The basis of the game, running plays from scrimmage, passing or running at least 10 yards for a first down, 6 points for a touchdown etc. has probably not changed in over 100 years. Obviously fine tuning takes place on an evolutionary basis, but the game is essentially the same.
