Usually, you open the lid and grab the top just inside the lid. You then pull the top sharply toward yourself. This should release a latch mechanism that allows you to tilt the top back.

Take 2 screws off the base of the washer and the front panel comes off easily.
take 2 more scews off under the top to get to the problem.
The problem in these old maytags is a part called the injection bladder as seen below;

Don't just start yanking on panels because you could end up breaking the fastener holding it there. I had one washer where you had to yank the top off. The next one had two little screws that held the control panel on and it came apart from there.
