I would like to have a Murphy bed but they are expensive and so is the kits to make your own. Just wondering if anyone has made one on their own not using a kit. I would appreciate your knowledge on how to go about it.
Thanks

Yes, I have one in my home office. I made it using some basic items from Rockler.com.

They provide the hinge and air type counter balance system with instructions. They are available in a couple of sizes and configurations. If you follow the instructions very carefully, you have have a very nice bed. You do need some basic wood working skills and tools.

You can make it look like a piece of furniture or hide it in a closet as I did.

I have the top portion of a twin mattress (no box springs) and a 2 inch layer of foam on mine and it is very comfortable.

Good Q and a great memory. I love em personally and would look into what Oil Field suggested.

My issue with them has always been the amount of room they take up in a room if they don't go flush into a wall; and for that one would need to modify a wall, and likely anything on the other side of the wall.

Still; it's a great concept reborn.

If your phyisically able to lift the mattress and the board without the springs or shocks. Just hing it on the wall and be done with it. Or rig up a pulley system.
