You don't just bush one tooth, you brush them all right? So why not call it a teeth brush?

Actually, the "toothbrush" was originally an invention used on horses, not humans! And since horses have MUCH larger teeth, at that time it made perfect sense to call it a "toothbrush" rather than a "teethbrush".

In the mid 1800's, a man called Ira Cavitus Colgate adapted the "toothbrush" for human use by making it MUCH smaller. Mr.Colgate had formerly made his fortune by developing a special paste to clean horse's teeth ( http://www.strangehistory.org/toothpaste.html ), convincing owners it made them run faster...

And the rest, as they say, is history!

Back in 1803 when the tooth brush was invented, the "tooth" brush could only brush one tooth at a time. Besides the info before, it just plain and simple sounds better. And the people in the 1800's were DUMB!

Because you can brush each tooth individually.
But I don't think anyone on Yahoo! Answers made the toothbrush so I don't think any of us would know exactly why.

Ha ha....I have never thought of that before, but maybe who ever invented the 'tooth brush' came from another country so English wasn't their 1st language. Apart from that I don't have any other ideas..lolz. =)
