When you're trying to build a relationship. It's fine for dating, in fact being mysterious can be fun. It suggests that a person has depth that they might not actually have had time to cultivate. But when you actually shift towards wanting to build a relationship or a friendship, it can cause that other person to misunderstand you, read too much or too little into the relationship, and even do harmful things when they're trying to be helpful.
