Distribute the 2/5 to the parenthesis:
4/5y+2/5=y-3
Then get the variables on the same side:
4/5y+2/5=y-3
-4/5 -4/5
2/5=1/5y-3
Then get the variable alone:
2/5=1/5y-3
+3 +3
3 2/5=1/5y
Finally, divide by 1/5:
3 2/5=1/5y
/ 1/5 / 1/5
17=y
17 is the answer.

First, multiply 2/5 times everything in the parenthesis.
4/5y + 2/5 = y-3
Get the unknowns (y) on one side
4/5 y - y + 2/5 = -3
Now move all the known numbers to the other side
4/5y - y = -3 - 2/5
Combine
-1/5y = -3 2/5 or - 17/5
To get rid of the fraction, multiply both sides by 5
y= 17
Check your work by replacing "Y" with 17
2/5(2.17)+1) = 17-3
2/5 . 34+1 or 2/5 . 35 = 14
17-3 = 14

multiply the whole thing by 5
so 2(2y+1)=5(y-3)
the distribute
4y+2=5y-15
then even out both sides
17=y
ther you have it
i hope this helps
:)
and good luck with the rest of your math

2/5(2y + 1) = y-3 : Do 2/5 to 2y and 1
.8y + .4 = y-3 : - .4 to both sides.
.8y = y - 3.4 now minus y or 1y to both sides
-.2y = -3.4 Now divide -.2 to both sides
y = 17

step 1: distribute the 2/5 to the (2y +1)
so you get 0.8y +2/5=y-3
then you add three to both sides so you get
0.8y+ 3 2/5 = y
hope that helps!

2/5(2y) + 2/5(1)=y-3
(4y)/5+ 2/5=y-3 multiply the whole thing by 5 to make it easier to work with
4y+2=5y-15
17=y
plug it in to check:
2/5(35)=14
14=14, so it works
