Well, I agree with you, students should be graded in traditional studies. Reasons: 1. It's the only way to assess student's abilities, talents, information retention, and recently acquired skills. 2. Students need feedback about where they stand in a classroom, and one of those ways and perhaps one of the most prominent ways is through somesort of grading system. 3. Teachers need to know what a student has and hasn't learned, and not just for the student's sake, but to also know where they have succeeded and failed in teaching. 4. There is a lot of competition in the world, like trying to get into a college, and one of the ways to sort through thousands of applicants is by their grades, because otherwise, where would a college begin? Of course they take other things into consideration, but grades are one way of measurement. 5. Grades promote competition and competition makes people better. 6. Grades give structure and meaning to a classroom setting and it gives students goals to work for. If you're a C student, you may work extra hard to be a B student, etc,. 7. Students have always been graded and it's worked, sure there are new methods of assessing student's abilities and paper-pencil work does not always mesh well with certain students, but there are many different ways to assess a student's capiliblities and talents and skills. 8. It allows teachers to know what students are understanding and what they aren't, and thus it allows them to reflect and change their lesson plans to be more effective.

Your third point could be that life is full of objective measurements, so grading can be a way for people to assimilate to that aspect of life.

If it's not graded, then the whole point of writing the paper is no longer existant, and therefore, you wasted your time. That's probably what I'd write :P
