Probably for several reasons:
1) to help less fortunate people
2) to get a tax deduction
3) to feel good about themselves

Because if they didn't the charities wouldn't exist - meaning society, and the world, would be in an even worse state than it is today!!
I mean how many of us really need every penny we have, more than charities and the causes they help need it? It's lucky there are still some remotely unselfish people left.

Charities usually promote a cause,an interest, aneed, etc. People who have been most fortunate in their business endeavors, heirs within the wealthy family, have accumulated wealth which they feel, if much of it was distributed, many less fortunate would benefit. As a result foundations have been established which distribute to worthy recipients. The recent most visible venture were the combination of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. For the layman a tax deduction.

Some people are compelled to try to help others, and donating to charity fills that need without having to get one's hands dirty. Also, as it's been pointed out, it's tax deductible.

Because its simple. People are in need. If every family that had $1 or $5 to spare and they weren't selfish. And decided to give that $5 to someone who actually needed it, it would do alot of good in the world. How many times do you spend $5 on a fancy meal when you know you could have gotten a double cheeseburger instead?

My own reason is this: If I were in need of help, I certainly would appreciate receiving it. Also it is a known fact that if we help one another, we both become strong.
