I've always called him "Slick Willy" (in a loving, respectful way). He's never lost that title.

Because he insists on it. No other dethroned President ever got called President in the media the likes of Bill Clinton. Never. Always former, or EX?? This is very unusual. I wonder the same myself?

It's a traditional sign of respect. People are generally referred to by the highest position they have obtained, president, general, etc.

EDIT - EVERY former president has been referred to as Mr President.

I'm not even sure why we called him 'President Bill Clinton' while he WAS in office. How about 'Slick Willy Clinton?' That's what I called him. A lot more fitting then PREZ!!!

Although I despise him as a person, he earned the title of president by the vote of the american people. Mostly, people still call him president out of force of habit. The proper title is 'former president'.

Presidents, senators, congressmen, judges, governors, ambassadors, secretaries (political secretaries - not office assistants) and others area all formally addressed by their former title after they leave office. It is not required legally, but it is expected socially.
