I can't find the answer in the manual. I called them but they were closed already. Does anyone know the answer?

The manual says that for forward facing directions it must be in the upright position. But in the rear facing directions it doesn't say either way.

Yes, it does need to be in the reclined position, but you can install it more upright.

Pull the seat about 1 inch from the seat bight (where the vehicle seat back meets the vehicle seat bottom), then put your knee by where baby's feet would go and install it that way. If it is too upright, you can use the rearfacing tether to make it slightly more reclined.

Carseats for older infants and toddlers do not need to be at a full 45 degree recline and can be up to 30 degrees reclined.

Until your baby has good neck control the seat should be set at a 45 degree angle. Once they have good neck control the recline of the seat is not nearly as important. My 10 month old HATES being reclined that far anymore, he prefers his seat to be more upright.

There should be a sticker or a marker some where on the side of the seat that reads "level with ground". Ive never seen a seat without one.
