Start by giving away 1/4 of what he had.
The second line says he gave 1/3 of what he has left. Well since he's already used 1/4, he had 3/4 left. So that's 1/3 of 3/4 (which is 3/12=1/4). Now he's used 1/4+1/4=1/2 of what he started with. Next he gave 1/2 of that 1/2 away and 1/2 of 1/2 is another 1/4 of what he started with. So far he's given 1/4+1/4+1/4=3/4 of what he started with away. he's left with 1/4 of what he started with and that is 16000. So you can take 16000*4 to get your answer.
16000*4=64000

Work backwards:
He gave away 16,000 to the aged to end up with nothing.
Before that he gave away half to a university:
m - (1/2)m = 16,000
(1/2)m = 16,000
m = 32,000
So at the university he started with $32,000.
Then before that he gave away 1/3 to the local library:
n - (1/3)n = 32,000
(2/3)n = 32,000
n = (3/2) * 32,000
n = 48,000
So at the library he started with $48,000.
Finally, he gave away 1/4 of the money to the salvation army:
s - (1/4)s = 48,000
(3/4)s = 48,000
s = (4/3) * 48,000
s = 64,000
So he started with $64,000
Double-check the answer:
Start with $64,000.
One fourth ($16,000) given to the salvation army --> $48,000
One third ($16,000) given to the library --> $32,000
One half ($16,000) given to university --> $16,000
Remainder ($16,000) given to a home for the aged.

Let x be his total money.
He gave (x/4) to the salvation army.
He's left with (x -x/4) = 3x/4
He gave (1/3)(3x/4) = x/4 to the local library.
He's left with (x - x/4 -x/4) =x/2
He gave (1/2)(x/2) = x/4 to the university
he's left with (x/2 -x/4) =x/4
he's left with 16000 which is x/4
Therefore x = 4*16000 = 64000
He had 64000 in the beginning, he gave it all, such a generous person!
