It's no secret why so many people love to hate the Yankees today. Just their mammoth payroll is reason enough. Or the way they seem to snatch many of the best players in the league - often from teams that just can't afford them. And I'm sure 25(? number) World Series Titles has something to do with it.

But I'm curious to know when the tide changed. It seems like the Yankees used to be America's team. The team seems to be linked to many of the greatest moments in the history of the game and many of the game's best players spent time with the Yankees.

On a side note: one of my greatest baseball memories was going to Yankee Stadium to root for the Boston Red Sox while wearing my Giants hat. I was in the third deck behind home plate and I'm surprised at how close to the field those seats were. While the stadium wasn't anything special, there was a real sense that that was what baseball was all about.

When they started winning like crazy and spending hundreds of millions. Soon people will start hating the Red Sox for the same reason; people love the underdogs.

Its this thought that that they Yankees are corporate bullies who can buy talent away from other teams, giving some of the poorer teams no chance to contend with them.

By the way it has more to do with success. Even the Red Sox have been getting lines on here about buying world series.

The Yankees used to be Americas team but like America in many ways peoples love for their strive to succeed was replaced by envy for becomming a powerhouse which many teams pale in comparison to

On a side note: you will notice that in many baseball movies the opposing team at the end of the movie is the Yankees. hey are the ultimate favorite who the odds always go to so it makes the underdogs seem that much better for beting them

See, you guys are missing the point...the Red Sox won't suffer the same fate as the Yanks even though they spend comparably because of WHOM they choose to spend the money on...the Sox sign good guys that have fun playing baseball and play the game the right way...this might sound familiar to Yankees fans, remember the late 90's? I'm as big a Sox fan as you'll find, and I couldn't hate those late 90's Yankees...I was envious but they were all hard-working veterans and gutsy rookies playing the game right...kind of like the Sox right now! The tide turned when the Yanks sold their souls for more titles...they dropped classy veterans like Tino Martinez, Paul O'Neill, Scott Brosius and Andy Pettite for hired guns with no heart like Giambi, Sheffield and A-Rod...the soul of that franchise changed when they stopped believing in building a TEAM like that had in the 90's and went for individuals like that have now. They can turn it around, but the Sox have done it the right way, and that's why they're champions again. GO SOX!!!

The Yankees became hated because they were buying the championship while it was working. Steinbrener forgot some where along the way that the players need talent and have guys in their prime,,,,,but not prime to retire. Everything caught up with them and knew what he was doing. Taking the centerpiece player that teams needed and putting them on his glass shelf. But those days are over and the sad thing is they still will be hated for years to come.

I don't really have a problem with the Yankees. I'm upset the Red Socks killed my Rockies. They cheated!! There should be a rule about switching your pitchers too much. Every time a Rocky got on a base, they switched the pitchers! Plus, they snatched the best players from around the country, our Rockies are pretty good to win 21 games prior, and they are young and rookies! I'm sure the Red Socks deserved what they got, but I'm still gloomy.

When they signed all the big shot, big mouthed players.

Talent is respected. Hot air is not.

Listen to the difference in how they speak and anyone from any New England team speaks before or after a game.

It goes back to the 1920s.

The play and movie Damn Yankees is centered around the 1940s teams.

So it's nothing recent!
