Oh I know somebody that did the same thing. She was a close friend. It doesnt bother me, its not like I see it.
I personally dont care either way. I dont have one, will never get one. I dont find that they add to a girl, but I dont see simple ones distracting from a girl.
But she got the exact same tattoo. She got chinese lettering of DESTINY. She sent me a picture of it. I said thats kewl. So I sent it to my friend in taiwan. She laughed. She said I see it all the time. Its wrong. I see americans with this tattoo once in awhile, but it doesnt mean that.
She said they have to change 2 strokes and this has to be removed.
If you are getting chinese lettering you better be able to read it or find somebody that does. Because after my friend knew, we looked up tattoo shops online and almost all of them for the word destiny was wrong.
Not that it matters because it means what it means to you. You could put an X and say it means destiny. If you are good with that, thats all that matters. But if you really want it to me that in chinese be careful. That is a very popular tattoo and usually wrong.
I got all this information from a very close friend that lived in China and Taiwan.
Good luck have fun with your tattoo.
*** UPDATE ***
As per the poster right below me. I sorta agree with him. If you cant speak it dont put it on your skin. I think most chinese people would agree with his comment. It may alienate you from some people but they could be impressed if you knew mandarin.
Take a few classes.

Depends on the kind of guy you go for. Some guys will have less respect for a girl who is tattooed, but I just think that's really conservative.
Tattoos can make a girl look like a complete skank, or they can push you in a bit of a "butch" direction... or they can just show that you're a bit playful and rebellious.
I'm an inked up chick and I think the trick is to place your tatts strategically and make sure you think through what is going to be visible and whether it's going to suit your clothing and personality or if it'll just look completely out of place and ridiculous.
I can honestly say that I have *no* respect for a westerner with Asian lettering tattooed on them UNLESS they have a special bond with that country. E.g. If you've married a Chinese man, or you've been there on holidays and fell in love with the country.
In any other instance, it's definitely TACKY and HORRIBLE... and so predictable.

I like tattoos on women. Not necessarily completely covered with full sleeves, but overall I think they can be very sexy.
If you get Chinese letters, just make sure a reliable 3rd party verifies it says what you think it says, as I've heard horror stories of mis-interpretations.
Get something that is meaningful to you, and it will always remind you of where you were at during this stage of your life. Don't worry about the long-winded guy talking about Navy tats from the 40's. Most of those guys did them themselves or in shady ports of call in back alleys. Go to a reputable place and you'll be fine. If they fade over the years you can always get them touched up or added to.
Don't worry about the uber-conservatives who answered they are gross or tacky. If it makes you happy, go for it.
Trust me, MANY guys will think it's attractive, but you should do it for you, not for them.

Personally I don't like the idea that they are permanent. I couldn't see myself being much older and having some tattoo on my shoulder, or wherever. But I do like a lot of the designs quite a bit.
If only there was a way that they could put a tattoo on you, and have it last only, say, 3 or 4 years and after that it slowly dissolves into your skin and vanishes completely. That would be great. I would get one under those circumstances. But otherwise, no. They're just not for me.

I love art....but, I like to change the picture. Same critical thinking applies for a tattoo...you can't change the view (so to speak). Have you ever looked at the World War II / Navy guys with their tattoos. Their tatoos look terrible... It is like having a 1940's kitchen in 2007...very dated. Ninety-five percent are not recognizable...all blurred and muddy looking. Your tattooed shoulder would look like a giant hairy nevus ...without the hair. Who wants to wear an evening gown twenty years from now with what looks like a giant melanoma on their back.
The topic of the tattoo is so subjective and individualized...it isn't going to attract ALL guys in general. Are you sure you want to take that risk of "turning off" the one trophy guy you always wanted?
Who wants to have a doctor caring for them that has a skull or grim reaper tatooed on their arm? I'd think twice if he was my Anesthesiologist. I think most tattoos are done on impulse and not well planned. I was at the mall and noted a girl with a "bursting star tattoo centered over her umbilicus. Her abdomen was obese...and hanging over her pants. She had a mid-drift top on ...and she was sporting her tatoo... she thought everyone was admiring. It took my breath away.
I actually went to a place (with three people I know) and watched them get tattooed. I think it is kind of a fad thing and will have a negative side to it down the road I see it as someone exerting their sense of independence and individuality on a low level...kind of sophomoric (intellectually pretentious but immature and ill-informed). Sorry, just my opionion and what I am noticing atleast a third of the population reacting similarly.
I was in an art store and saw a tatoo artist getting colored ink "right off" a shelf to use for a tattooing. It was meant for use on paper. Some inks have carcinogenic qualilties...this is now being addressed in the tattoo magazines. I did see one tattoo that was horribly infected or had a cellulitis from the ink awhile back. I don't think it happens too often...but I wouldn't want to pick up a blood-borne pathogen like hepatitis, or HIV.
I say ...do something very artistic with henna...a stain that will wear off and NOT put you at risk. You can change the subject of the artwork too.
As a guy...I would be attracted to the girl that could be subtlely revealing with their clothing. Some one that would look innocent yet become "an exotic" To me it is the contrast or the talent some girls have ...to evolve for someone they are comfortable with. The tattoo kind of spoils that transition.
I saw one simple tattoo on the inside of a guy's forearm. It was written in an early centry French script. [it had "copyright" & had his birthdate]. It had very thin flowing lines...not very big...perfectly balanced and spaced ...in one color. I thought it was symbolic and meant he was one of a kind ...not to be copied. That is the only one I thought was practical and I could live with for a lifetime. Yet the idea is already taken...so it lost it's property of being unique... if I did it too.
If you have to get a tattoo...place it where it can be hidden and only revealed to the right person at the right time. Perfect excuse to show "someone special" a portion or part of your butt when you want to move to a more intimate or playful level. If you do something in Chinese or another language...make sure is really says what it is suppose to and the script is classic not someone's first grade Chinese handwriting.
As you can tell...I put some thought into my BEST ANSWER!

Personally I cannot understand why any girl would want to deface her body with a tattoo. They're tacky, trashy and shriek out of attention seeking. You may think it's cool now but consider that as they are permanent in future years you'll either be left with a reminder of a youthful mistake or an unsightly scar where you had it removed.
My pet hates for things that girls do that make them unattractive are:-
Taking drugs
Smoking
Having tattoos or body piercing
Using bad language
Dressing or acting like a tart.
That's just my personal opinion and you have yours but please, if you must have a tattoo, try out a henna one first that will eventually wear off .That way you won't be stuck with an unsightly disfiguration for life.

It is a matter of personal taste, but ask this of yourself ... with the tattoo that you think is cool today be cool in 5 years? Look at hair styles and cloths from the 70's 80's & 90's ....
Be carefu .... my sons friend got a tat that was supposed to be Chinese for "strength" ... our friend runs the local Chinese resturant ... he said it says "kung pau chicken" - DOH!

I was just going to ask the same thing!!!!! Actually, I was going to ask if there's such a thing as too many, or not enough. But along the same lines.
I've noticed some guys love 'em, some guys hate 'em, and everything in between. Mostly, the guys I meet all like them. But then, everyone in California is tattooed and/or pierced.

I have no tattoos. My wife had two tattoos from her radiation therapy. The doctors put two small dots on her chest to help align the radiation gear for her cancer treatments. She used the bit from "Friends"; it was the earth and moon as seen from a great distance. Otherwise, no tattoos for this guy.
