Why should someone get paid more than another person? Some people struggle to survive. Not everyone can be successful. Why should people get paid millions of dollars and others get paid practically nothing? And not everyone who actually helps society gets paid a lot; movie stars, professional sports stars, etc get paid alot, and others who actually try hard in their jobs get paid little more than dirt. That isn't fair. Everyone needs to be paid the same. Money shouldn't be an issue for anyone. People should do a job because they are passionate about it. Their own self-satisfaction should be its own reward.

Well, obviously you would have to work. I meant in the sense that everyone who works gets paid the same.

I disagree. People should get paid depending on their own merits, and performance. What i think is unaffair is someone that is twice as better at performing a task getting paid the same amount.

The world can never be fair, and here's why. There are two notions of fairness, and they are at odds with one another. If you embrace one, you destroy the other. One is fairness with regard to opportunity, and the other is fairness with regard to outcome.

If you choose to be fair as far as giving everyone the same opportunity to succeed, some will do better than others. Some people, through hard work, inborn talent and, yes, luck, will end up with more than others. That's the way of the world.

On the other hand, if you impose fairness with regard to outcome...that is, if you make sure everyone gets the same reward regardless of talent, effort, passion etc., you can only do so by being unfair to those who have worked the hardest, done the best and contributed the most.

It's tempting to look around and think about how much better the world would be, if all the wealth we see around us and take for granted was divided fairly. The problem with that viewpoint, of course, is that it assumes that the world would look the same under your system, except for the inequality. But communism destroys incentive. People simply will not put the same passion into work that will be confiscated from them in the end. You inevitably end up in a world that is uniformly miserable, as each person tries to do the least amount possible to satisfy the requirements, knowing that the rewards are sparse, and there is no way of changing it.

I thinks its very fair, if you work hard make sacrifices, set and achieve goals you should be rewarded. Unlike most Americans who feel the world is owed to them because they where born. Their parents probably did all that to give to there kids. And those little brats know now is to stick there f-en hands out and say give me. I will agree some sports figures are nothing but over paid Gangsta wanna Be's.Bill Gates, well he had an idea, a goal and so on, now he reaps the reward, and you say its wrong. I say it's jealously, of ambition, self reliance, individualism. Is it fair that two people who do the same job , one who shows up on time excells at what he/she does, and takes pride in what he/she does etc. The other does the opposite is it fair to pay them the same? would you? If your answer is yes then your a liar. Nobody in there right mind would do that. so take that not fair BS and shove that up a pipe.

There would be no incentive to struggle through years of college and extra training to become a scientist, doctor, engineer or other highly trained professional.
Think supply and demand - surely its much easier to replace and train a person who is doing a menial task than it is to replace and train a heart surgeon.
Professional sports stars, movie stars and such get paid according to the ticket paying audience that they draw - for instance, a twenty-game winning baseball pitcher will assure a full stadium (anywhere from 25,000-45,000 fans) every time he's scheduled to pitch - multiply that times the ticket price times the 150+ games and the owner can easily pay him the big dollars. Same for movie stars that draw a large audience, or singers or bands and so forth.
You may not think it fair that a gangsta rapper makes more than a college professor, nurse or research scientist - but the audience that his income is drawn from is infinitely larger.
If everyone was paid the same - very few people would aspire to ever get out of their entry level, no pressure, easy job. Do you want that super sized?

It sadly has nothing to do with fair. Why do movie stars make millions? It's because everyone is willing to pay ten bucks to watch their movie. In that case at least, more than anything americans want to be entertained. I've heard the saying "the world will pay you what it thinks you're worth." It's a sad reality. Money and material wealth doesn't make anyone happy, but until the world can admit that to itself, very little wealth will be shared by many of those who have it. Some are incredibly generous. Most are not.

Money is an expression of value. It is a signal to work or not work, invest or sell. Money is a kind of language in itself. If you create “equal distribution of wealth” what you are doing in ending the usefulness of money as a signal. Central planning is what your idea would require and that fails every time it is tried because the central planners do not see the “big picture.” It is the individual buyers and sellers on the streets who can see what is really going on in their own lives. Only you can see through your own eyes and hear through your own ears and feel through your own fingertips. No central planner in Washington D.C. can see how ripe the tomatoes are at your grocery store or how well your personal car is. Only you as an individual can see these things from your perspective.

JJ, I've noticed in your various questions that you're deeply concerned with the concept of fairness. How is it fair that someone could contribute the absolute minimum to society and be rewarded the same as the person who trains for years and works eighty hours a week and makes a difference in people's lives?

That isn't to say that how it works now is fair -- your example of "stars" illustrates that it isn't. But the method you propose is just as unfair.

That my dear is the principles of commusism.
Yes there are people who work hard and get paid crap. However they have to opportunity to improve themselves by furthering their education.
Why would a doctor want to spend 10 years in school if he/she is going to be making the same money as a bellhop?? Why would a football player want to risk injury if they are going to be paid the same as a worker at Mcdonalds?? Why bother trying to better ones self if everybody is making the same amount of money. The MONEY is an incentive to persue higher risk/more educated jobs.

Great idea, JJ! I'm tired of working.

I'll be home, waiting for you to send me an equal share of your check.

Edit - No, you're right - not everyone DOES get the chance to make money. However, let's analyze my in-laws here:

My husband - graduated HS, went to trade school, has an excellent career AND runs two businesses on the side. We do pretty well.

2nd brother - did NOT finish HS, but managed to get a very good job in spite of that fact. However, he spends like a drunk in a whore house, so his family teeters on the verge of bankruptcy all the time.

3rd brother - did NOT finish HS, does NOT have a good job. Spends most of his time drunk and on drugs.

All three of these men had the exact same background. Why did one succeed and the others fail? PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Why in the hell should my husband work his *** off to support his idiot brothers?!?

That is what communist\Socialist believed in. Everyone is equal, but you and I know that we are not all equal (physically ,emotionally...etc.). We are living in a capitalist society. We encourage people to work hard and be inventive. And by doing so, society will reward them for it. Incentive, supply & demand---basic economic 101! It does really works!
