Yes if you NEED a PC on the go. Otherwise and if you do a lot of gaming, a desktop is better. It is cheaper and easier to boost 3D graphics in desktops.
Heavy laptop use has freebies; wrist pain (Carpal Tunnel syndrome) and neck pain (looking downwards on the screen).

why not? These days its almost vital to have a computer - at all ages. At 17 you should be mature enough to handle something like that.
