The gist of it is Abe Lincoln was not popularly elected in 1860 and only got in because the powerful Democrat Party could not reconcile their differences and ran two candidates for President-one Democrat candidate for the North, and one Democrat Party candidate for the South.

The Republicans were unified, however, and Abe Lincoln got the highest number of votes. States of the South seceeded shortly thereafter and the South fired on Fort Sumter and war was declared.

Even if the Democrats had won, however, slavery would have still been an issue and I believe the winds of war were inevitable at that time.

What aided Abraham Lincoln the most in 1860 election was the fracture of the Democratic party. Lincoln was the only Republican, while Douglas and Breckinridge split the Democrats. Breckinridge won the south, Bell (Constitutional Union party) won the border states, and Lincoln took the north and west from Douglas. As the north had the greater population, Lincoln won the electoral college vote even though he failed to get 50% of the popular vote.
