We shouldn't accommodate any groups of people. Our focus should be entirely on the individual and the nation as a whole.

Stop being so damn nosey and judgmental. The lies that have been perpetrated over the centuries should be forgotten. It was decided for example that blacks were no more than animals. That the Hispanics are lazy. I'm a Scot and Indian by heritage and you know the lovely things they call us. The Irish have taken their fair share of crap, etc.
Throughout the history of this planet one looks at another and judges. An understanding that we are one. We are all humans and in this together. This being said I do think learning the language would be an immense help to those trying to find their way through this country. If I chose to live in another country the 1st thing I would learn was the language. We each have our own customs and that should be respected not scorned. The one thing that makes the U.S. so cool is our vastly diverse heritage.

Stop worrying about it.

Really, its the people who get upset at this stuff that cause the problems, not the people who are just doing like they've always done. Now, there's certain things in which everyone needs to toe the line, such as issues involving laws, medical and sanitary issues, and other things. But if you want to speak your language, or wear your clothes, or go to your church, go for it! That's what makes it America in the first place.

BUT... only as long as you understand the consequences of your actions. If you do not try to learn the language that is spoken in this country, then you will be at a disadvantage. If you do not adhere to the socials mores (MORE-ays) in things like dress and behaviors, then you will not be as easily accepted, especially in formal or professional settings.

Every single person has their own ethnicity, in a way, their own differences that they sometimes need to put aside in order to be the good citizen, and sometimes they need to hold on to those differences in order to be true to themselves. For every person, American freedom is the right to choose which way you want to lean; do you assimilate, do you stand out, do you choose when to be different and when to blend in, what do you do?

Any accomodations begin and end with the individual person understanding what is normally accepted, and what is normally unaccepted, and choosing which way to go with the full knowledge of the consequences that may occur.

I think the best way is for people to realize that they are in America now and do their best to assimilate into their new home and adopt the culture instead of insisting we change our culture to accomodate them.

Not saying to give up your heritage, but it needs to take a back burner to the American way.

It is called a "melting pot" because new additions to the pot blend in with what is already there.

But, the diversity espoused by democrats today is NOT the way to go.

The promise of "diversity" is that people of many different backgrounds, interests, nationalities, religions, and philosophies will work together in a university or place of employment. The usual strong implication, or occasional stated reason, is that because of their inherent differences, a diverse population possesses complementary skills and experience, and the resulting whole unit would be stronger.

Who could oppose such a Utopia?

The reality is a far cry from the above. The problem is that "diversity" does not really mean the above. Diversity is a code word, a euphemism for a racial preference system where chosen minority groups are given preferences because of their skin color. The gentle veneer of the word 'diversity' shrouds an illegal, dishonest, and hypocritical racial agenda.

Real people get hurt by diversity. Qualified candidates get passed over, and unqualified persons get positions beyond their capabilities. Educations are denied. Excellent businesses never get funded, meaning jobs don't get created. Shaky businesses get government guaranteed loans, and they default. Careers and businesses get ruined. The taxpayers pick up the tab.

The concept of racial preferences goes against the US Constitution and very essence of our legal system which is based on the principle that rights adhere in individuals, not in groups. The 14th Amendment guarantees equal protection under the law.

Similarly, the idea of "affirmative action" is associated with laudable beginnings. The concept of affirmative action was started by President Johnson in a 1965 executive order which requires federal contactors to "take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and that employees are treated during employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin."

Again, the reality is a far different story.

Affirmative Action has been perverted to become the exact opposite of its original purpose, which was to prevent and remediate racial discrimination. Now, it is a vehicle for causing harm and causing discrimination. The issue of remediation for actual discrimination is long forgotten. It is now a vestigial organ of policy which provides for group rights, quotas, and a racial agenda. It is now an illegal way for certain favored groups to be given preferences for their skin color. Diversity has come to mean a racial preference system.

Diversity is also abitrary and capricious because the whole concept of race is so undefined. What is the clear cut definition of race and how one qualifies? Whose skin is dark enough? See below article entitled "DNA Evidence Shows Race Doesn't Really Exist."

In the seminal book Animal Farm, George Orwell wrote: "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others." Orwell's dystopia has arrived.

Diversity is anti-merit
Diversity is racism
Diversity is hypocrisy
Diversity is a lie
Diversity is WRONG!

Ethnicity is a matter of voluntary identity, and does not have to correllate to your ancestry or physical apearance.

Today, people are preasured to accept ethnic labels that may not really aply to them, because of the ethnicity of thier ancestors. That is, race and ethnicity are confused. Instead, 'American' should be recognized as a legitimate ethnicity, comprising anyone and everyone who identifies primarily with the language and culture of the United States of America, regardless of race or ancestry.

I live in NYC... Brooklyn to be exact, also known as Kings County... according to census figures... it is the most diverse county in the country, and quite possibly the world. 2 million people from all over the place. Its a beautiful thing. There is no mistaking you are in America, it is never a problem. But you have the benfit of eating mad good food from everywhere. And buying goods you would never see elsewhere. Diversity is a good thing.. or would you prefer to be over run by McDonald's and Starbucks?

Parades, street festivals... mad beautiful women in every tone .. it is without doubt a good thing. Not to mention if you speak with people, you may get a lrager understanding of whats actually going on in the world, cuz you can't trust the news.

Stop giving welfare endlessly they are doing no one a favor. Education and job preparedness, helping one to stand on there own with pride of being an American instead of dividing the races. Stop harping on historical events that divide. Go forward into a new day and strive to work together. The more we reflect on the past the more the line gets drawn in the sand. History played a huge roll in our lives but placing blame on todays people for what someone did yesterday is not progressive.

I agree with the first answer - I treat EVERYONE like Americans. I was fortunate, I guess - I grew up in a pretty color-blind household. We had friends of all races, ethnic backgrounds, whatever label you want to put on it - and our parents welcomed our friends just like family.

Why do we have to focus on our relatively minor differences, and start focusing on the things we have in common?

immigrants and Americans should respect each other outright!

Americans= dont look down on people who werent born here.

Immigrants= respect the english language and our ways of things. and understand that America is a country, with language and culture!! not a place to make money so you can leave and then make fun of us

This is so complicated to answer. There will always be some divide in this country because racism is rooted deep in our society. The basic problem is this...(generalizing of course) white people will always believe there is no problem and that blacks etc need to quit bitching and quit relying on entitlements and quit crying racism, so it all snowball, more backlash toward black people from whites which signifies more racism toward blacks. So its like a huge nasty cycle that continues...both sides pointing fingers instead of getting together to fix the problems. Somehow , we need to make all things equal....starting with the school systems. Its obvious that inner city schools are in terrible shape and the kids get a second rate education from kids in suburbian schools and so on. I mean the inequities are so apparent and this is why minorities feel this racism.
ONe big problem , i believe, despite having lots of racism etc in our society...at some point minorities need to step up and take personal responsiblility, because we can have all the programs in the world , but until people take responsibility for themselves, things will never change. I take for example my best friend, who is black. He has 3 brothers and 3 sisters...none of them have ever worked and they are in their 20's and 30's, most have done serious jail time and have no interest in getting jobs. His 29 yr old brother has 12 kids....12 and they are by 10 different mothers....yet he has never worked other than dope dealing, so he has no means to take care of his kids but he keeps making them. My friend was smart and started working and got out of that environment, but he is the only one in his family. So, my point is, that no program will help until people take responsibility for themselves. Yes, we need to combat racism when it is present, but overall, in this country, you can make it out...i am proof of that...i came from nothing , in the hood so to speak, even though i am white and i am now at least working class and have a house and trust me, coming from where i came, thats a lot.
