I heard they do. Extremely stupid isn't it? They probably do it in case the guy inserting the needle sneezes and hits himself with the needle.

There is an unwritten law that if the condemned prisoner lives through execution they get pardoned. The reason why the sterilize the needle is in the rare case that it does happen and he/she gets an infection from it they can sue the state. Sounds odd but true.

All needles used for medical reason come sterilized, I don't think they sterilize them just for this purpose.

Its sort of a civilized formality. Being put to death is a serious thing, especially if court ordered and you are sitting still to take it like a man. So in respect for the dead, or soon to be, we sterilize the needle because the person is still human. Sort of like why an undertake wears a black suit when he has to do his thing, even though he could wear sweats and a t shirt.
Even though we are killing them, they are'nt animals, they are human beings. Almost like a last rights before death, we're tyring to do something honorable in their last moments on earth.

Needles are already sterile when they come out of the package. That's just how they're manufactured and sold.
