That's a toughy, here's my general advice. If they are really about to attempt to hurt you, hit them, and not just once either, keep going until you have taken the fight from them. When you fight, sometimes people act like they are done. When you let up they attack you again. So it is best to beat them into complete submission. Trust me, they will not try for a rematch, lol.
But here is the thing, if they hit you and it is only one punch that didn't hurt, let it go. You can tell if there is a quick flash of temper vs an all out attack. But watch what you say and how you act.
Why do people like to hit you. The form of the question implies to me that this has happened on more than one occasion. School doesn't like it because they disapprove of all fighting. They do not want to get in the middle of it and say "You were right, and you were wrong." They won't take sides if both parties engaged in violence. Also, if you think about it, 3 day suspension is good too because it gives both sides time to cool off a little bit.
Once I got suspended for 5 days for fighting... because the dude was black... please. He didn't get extra because I am "white". And it didn't even matter that I am part black and 3/4th white. Oh well, those are the rules I guess. Dad thought it was kind of funny, ironic funny bacuase he is only 1/2 white... mom was pretty ticked off :P Good luck stay out of trouble, that's why the rules are the way they are though.

If you tell one of the school authorities you've been hit, they will probably do nothing
If you let your school mates get away with hitting you, you'll end up a target for bullies.
So listen to Mom, give them a good thrashing, and then deny it ever happened.
Plausible deniability, it's a wonderful thing.

and your mother is right and you should not be suspension if they hit u first, they should be suspension not you, but some school decide both are suspension you know.

Why doesn't my school agree on this? Because of lawyers.
who am I suppose to listen to? Well you always have the right to defend yourself. So if someone is hitting you your mom is right. Hit them back. Self-preservation.

Listen to your mom. Schools have to have that policy, so giant fights don't break out all over the place. But your moms is right, stick up for yourself.

Your mother would never steer you wrong. You need to walk in to school first thing tomorrow morning and start laying mofo's out. Dish out the punishments, all crimes retroactive, ASAP and show them you are not one to be taken lightly or messed with. *high five*

As I told my son, hit them on the point of the chin as hard as you can. If they are still standing, run like hell!
