A memoir is a book that you have written about your life and your view of history. It's a little different than autobiography, because memoirs can be much more personal in content - it's something like sharing your diary. A memoir doesn't have to be published - you can write a memoir that you leave for your children or grandchildren to read - but it gives your view of things, talks about how you think about different things, relates funny stories and sad stories - in general it gives not only the highlights of your life (as autobiographies do) but the valleys as well.
Memoirs don't have to be referenced or use citations because they contain YOUR views on the world around you. Even if you are dead wrong in what you think, that is still what you think, and in a memoir, what you think is what matters.
Memoirs can give interesting insights into people, into events and into specific periods of time and they generally make fascinating reading.
