Why are car license plates YELLOW on the BACK of the car, and WHITE on the FRONT of the car?

Just something that always made me wonder (jeez I sound like such a geek)

sarah d:
but surely a cars headlights will sometimes shine on both license plates; cars going in the opposite direction will show the front one, and a car in front will show the rear one. If that makes sense...

It's quite simple - originally they were white letters on black, and were like that for years.

Then, some bright spark thought of making them reflective, for safety reasons. The numbers on their own wouldn't reflect enough light, so they decided to reverse the colours, so you had black letters on white.

Great. Until someone remembered that it's illegal to have a white reflector at the back, so they changed it to red. However, red wasn't bright enough, so they changed it to yellow. (Though Northern Ireland stayed with red, I believe.)

That's strange I'm in the USA part and your question shows up. Here in the States they're identical front and rear. The colors vary from state to state though.

LOL thats funny and a very good point. The old cars that are still around seem to have black with silver writing?
Why did they change them?
